THYU 382 Music as Narrative

Explores ways of interpreting a musical work as a narrative trajectory, with primary focus on instrumental music. We will be working with analytical concepts and tools that are especially suited for generating narrative interpretations, such as musical agency, metaphor, and musical plot. Moreover, since various harmonic processes and formal designs can often be interpreted through a narrative lens, the course also draws on skills and knowledge already acquired through the core theory courses.
