MTHY 215 Post-Tonal Theory & Practice

The course has two units. Unit 1 introduces the foundational elements of post-tonal music, including various pitch collections, their combination and classification, expanded rhythmic and metric possibilities, and different types of musical form. Focusing on innovative musical thinking from the past 50 years, Unit 2 explores the expansion of musical materials, including just intonation and overtone series, intertextuality, the role of musical gestures as primary materials, and works based on electronic and technological advancements.
