CEPS 530T Culturally Responsive Teaching

Culturally Responsive Teaching affirms the cultural backgrounds and identities of students by centering students’ lived experiences and perspectives as strengths in the classroom. This course will explore how to create teaching and performing spaces that are welcoming and brave. Beginning with the concept of Cultural Humility as a frame through which to view our artistic practice, the course will focus on infusing culturally responsive elements into all aspects of classroom or performance planning. We will look at five elements: Classroom environment, content (what we teach/perform), instruction (how we teach), communication of expectations, and facilitating dialogue. In this course, NEC teaching artists will engage with the content through collaborative activities, various learning modalities, interactive discussions, and creative reflection strategies, where the experience in the class is part of the learning process. The final project will consist of a list of options to choose from such as developing shareable resources, creating a community-based lesson or performance plan, or an inclusive repertoire list. This class will model student-centered practices that we aspire to create in community educational spaces.
