THYU 412T Sixteenth-Century Counterpoint

Mastery of Renaissance counterpoint through the careful analysis, writing, and performance of three-voice motets and masses by Lassus, Palestrina, and other composers of the period. Mastery of the style and compositional techniques are demonstrated through the continuous analysis and writing of textures, motets, and mass movements. Readings in Pietro Aaron and Zarlino. A final portfolio of work is required and will contain successful examples of five textures, two motets, and the setting of one Mass movement.
