STR 559T Aural Heritage of String Playing
This course surveys the rich heritage of early recorded string performance as represented through sound recordings, artists in their own words, criticism, and contemporaneous descriptions. Additionally, the trailblazing careers and inspiring artistic trajectories of these artists are examined with a comparative lens. The course begins with a survey of 19th century performance aesthetics, and focuses on the recorded legacy of the “Golden Age” of string playing, an era bookended by the advent of recording technology at the end of the 19th century and World War II.
