JS 525T Development of Rhythmic Skills

In this class, we will apply Jerry Leake’s method of “Harmonic Time” for orchestrating and internalizing musical time, groove, and mathematics into the entire body. The purpose is to step away from the mind (“intellect”) and rely more on instinct (“feel”) for all styles of music applicable on any instrument. Our primary focus is a warrior drum and dance form in 12/8 from the Ewe People of Southern Ghana called “Agbekor.” Using Harmonic Time, students will learn the 12/8 bell and support patterns from an African, Afro-Cuban, academic, and contemporary POV. We will learn traditional songs while applying the HT method, as well as applications to piano and other instruments. In-class drumming of Agbekor will also be emphasized. We will open the door into cross-rhythm/polyrhythmic patterns in 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 inside the 12/8 cycle. Concepts of 24/8, 36/8 may also be discussed.
