INTG LA459 Climate Change Culture and Performance
Climate Change Culture explores how not only science but also emotions, psychological processes, cultural values, and media representations shape perceptions of climate change (CC); how political, economic, and ethical problems and local and global inequities arise as climates change; and how literary, visual, and musical artists depict CC. You’ll simultaneously apply your knowledge to produce a CC-related performance in a project-based Performance Practicum (e.g., a multi-genre concert, original opera scene, or interactive event). Accountable to your peers, you will determine roles, outcomes, and contributions within a shared project framework (e.g., management, fundraising/partnerships, programming/repertoire, composition, multimedia arts, audience outreach, marketing, research, program notes, pre/post-concert engagement). As your interdisciplinary studies and performance work intersect, we’ll consider how to make scientific facts emotionally relevant through different musical and artistic styles, forms, or genres; how to engage with climate deniers and intervene in climate media landscapes; how to approach diversity, equity, and inclusion in programming; how our own climate beliefs, practices, and privileges or disadvantages impact our work; and how artistic encounters may inspire real-world action. Ultimately, we’ll discover the cultures, communities, and environments you can create as twenty-first-century musicians. Evaluations include: homework, participation, presentations, a midterm paper, project analysis, project contributions, self-assessments.
