CMA 522 Third Stream Methodology II

This course will focus on compositional and improvisational forms from a number of world music traditions, including Bali, Japan, China, Middle East, and India. Concepts of phrasing, time, rhythm, texture, timbre, and form will be explored through these various musical traditions. Included in the course is the study of pieces by 20th century composers who have used aspects of non-Western musical traditions in their compositions. Selected pieces will be studied from the points of view of structure, content, style, gesture, and compositional process. Student assignments will involve imitation and memorization of given pieces, improvisation, composition, and recomposition projects.
