CEPS 530T Culturally Responsive Teaching

Culturally Responsive Teaching will focus on the practical application of CRT pedagogical principles in the music classroom. This course will contextualize Culturally Responsive Teaching within the broader evolution of asset pedagogies (multiculturalism, Culturally Responsive, Culturally Relevant, and Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies), delving into the ideas of leading scholars in these areas. Beginning with concepts such as Cultural Humility and Equity-centered Pedagogy as frames through which to view our teaching practice, the course will focus on the practical integration of CRT into various elements of teaching or performance, including the classroom or concert environment, school/program culture, and the broader community. In this course, NEC teaching artists will engage with the content through various activities and learning modalities, including reflective writing, creating lesson plans and a lesson plan template. This course takes a meta-cognitive approach to lens development: Candidates will not only understand and respond to content around Culturally Responsive Teaching but they will also be equipped to synthesize their content knowledge and to create a new resource for the music teaching artistry field. The final project of this course will prepare students for the real-world opportunity that music teaching artists often have to present content and share resources with peers in their field. The key goal is to become fully aware of our role as change makers in the music classroom and community, by developing intentional teaching and reflexive practices.
